Job Description

The Applied Materials Division (AMD) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to contribute to the research, development, and manufacturing of advanced cathode materials for next-generation lithium- and sodium- ion batteries.

This role provides a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of battery innovation, focusing on the design and implementation of novel synthesis and processing strategies aimed at achieving high performance, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability. The selected candidate will leverage the capabilities of the Materials Engineering Research Facility (MERF), a pre-pilot-scale research and development facility well-equipped for process development, scale-up, and prototyping. The Postdoctoral Appointee will be responsible for integrating materials processing with electrochemical performance objectives, establishing scalable synthesis workflows, and supporting technology transfer. The position involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams from academia, national laboratories and industry on advanced synchrotron X-ray, electron microscopy characterization, interfacial analysis, and full-cell prototyping.

Position Requirements
  • Recent or soon-to-be completed (typically within the last 0-5 years) in Materials Science, Chemical/Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Condensed Matter Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in materials synthesis, processing, and electrochemical characterization of cathode materials for lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and other advanced battery systems.
  • Active participation in collaboration with partners on multi-scale characterization, scaling up and cell prototyping.
  • Proven ability to disseminate research findings with scientific papers, patents and presentations.
  • Hands on experience with x-ray diffraction characterization and related structural characterization techniques.
  • Strong teamwork skills with a demonstrated history of effectively collaborating with team members and internal and external research groups.
  • Skills for effective communications, verbally and through writing.
  • Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
  • This position requires an on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with advanced characterization using synchrotron x-ray, electron microscopy, or neutron techniques.
  • Proficiency in impedance spectroscopy and other advanced electrochemical diagnostics.
  • Background in crystallography and structural analysis.
  • Experience with situ, operando characterization and/or quantitative data analysis/spectral image processing.
  • Use of data analytics or machine learning to guide process design and optimization.
